Roofers in Slough

Slough is a short drive from our base in Staines, and Rayner’s Roofing takes on roofing work for homeowners across the town and surrounding Berkshire villages. Our work here tends to focus on the roofs found on interwar and post-war family homes.

Concrete tile roofs on family homes

A great many houses in and around Slough were built in the middle of the twentieth century with concrete interlocking tiles. These tiles are heavy and durable, but the roofs underneath them are now old. Original felt underlays become brittle and tear, battens soften, and the mortar holding ridges and verges cracks and falls into the gutter.

When a roof like this begins to leak in several places, re-roofing with new membrane, battens and tiles is often the most practical answer. Where the problems are confined to the ridge, a hip or a few tiles, a targeted repair is enough. Our new roofs page explains what a full re-roof involves.

Ridges, hips and verges

Loose ridge and hip tiles are one of the most common issues on Slough homes, especially after storms. Mortar-bedded ridges can be rebedded, or replaced with a mechanically fixed dry ridge system that does not depend on mortar to stay weathertight. Our guide to dry ridge and mortar ridge sets out the differences.

Garages and flat-roofed extensions

Detached and attached garages, and the flat-roofed extensions added to many semis, are often the first part of a property to leak. Garage roofs in particular were frequently built with thin coverings and basic decks. We replace and repair garage roofs and other flat roofs, checking the boards, the falls and the gutter at the edge.

Fascias, soffits and gutters

On houses of this age, the original timber fascias have often been painted many times or already replaced once. Rot in the boards, sagging gutters and leaking joints are common. We repair and replace roofline systems so rainwater is carried away from the walls properly.

Rooflines on extensions and porches

Porch canopies, bay window roofs and the small lean-to roofs over side passages are common on Slough semis. They are low, often overlooked and frequently the source of damp around a front door or bay. These small roofs usually need the same attention as a main roof: sound tiles or covering, a proper flashing against the wall and a gutter that actually drains.

Planning your roof work

If your roof needs several jobs, such as ridge repairs and new gutters, it can make sense to plan them together so access is only paid for once. We look at the roof as a whole and explain what is urgent and what can wait.

Contact us with a description of the problem and, if possible, a photo. We will arrange to see the roof and follow up with a written quotation. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 8pm.

Services in Slough

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in Slough and nearby villages?

Yes. Slough is within our service area, which stretches around 30 miles from Staines.

My ridge tiles are loose after a storm. Do I need a new roof?

Usually not. Loose ridge tiles can be rebedded or replaced with a dry ridge system. A new roof is only worth considering if the rest of the roof has widespread problems too.

Can old concrete tiles be reused on a re-roof?

Sometimes, if they are sound and enough are undamaged. Many older tiles are worn or porous, so we check them before advising.

Is it worth fixing an old garage roof?

If the leak is from one split or a loose edge and the deck is firm, a repair is often worthwhile. If the boards are soft or leaks are widespread, replacement is the better option.

Can you do the gutters at the same time as roof repairs?

Yes. Combining roof and roofline work is often more efficient because the access is already in place.
